I’m deeply drawn to painting seascapes and landscapes because they offer a profound connection with the ever-changing beauty and power of the natural world. I particularly enjoy the rewarding challenge of rendering water in all its forms — capturing the fluid movement of waves, the glassy calm of a loch, or the reflective shimmer of a river — while conveying the many different moods of the sea, from serene and luminous to wild and dramatic. I love exploring the striking juxtaposition of mountains and water, whether its rugged peaks rising above a stormy coastline, a tranquil Scottish loch nestled beneath hills, or a river winding through a valley. I attempt to give the image depth and feeling by balancing shapes and negative space, varying hues and tones to reflect the unique character of the scene, and using moody skies or dramatic beams of sunlight to illuminate focal points, adding mood and mystery to the finished painting.
